Domestic Lumber
ALL PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE. Updated : 7/18/08 ** See Hardwood Grading Rules (1) Log Run - which basically means the whole cut-up tree as it comes from the mill. It's mostly No. 2 common or better. About 20 percent will be select. (2) Wormy - Wormy Soft Maple is a special characteristic of some Soft Maple trees. Along with the typical mixture of chocolate-brown heartwood and white sapwood found in Natural Soft Maple, Wormy Soft Maple adds a unique and casual look with its flame patterning near each worm hole. Though its name suggests otherwise, Soft Maple is actually quite hard. (3) Curly - Soft curly Maple lumber offers some of the best curly figure of all the Maple varieties. While curly soft Red or Silver Maple is indeed, a softer wood than the hard Rock or Sugar Maples, the Oaks and Walnuts, it is on a par with cherry in terms of its hardness and is a wood that is a treat to work and finish. One of the most beautiful hardwoods in North America. (4) S2S - Surfaced both sides (5) Quarter Sawn - Quarter sawing means cutting a log radially (90-degree angle) to the growth rings to produce "vertical" graining. This method yields fewer and narrower boards per log than plain sawing, boosting their cost significantly.
(6) Slab - A broad flat piece of wood cut directly from the log, often with bark on both edges.
(7) Pattern Grade - Pattern Grade stock is selected for a good fine textured straight grain for use in the pattern making industry. The color varies from a light reddish to yellowish-brown to a rich dark red color. (8) FAS - Highest grade in hardwood lumber. A board grading FAS must be at least 6" wide and 8' long. All FAS boards must yield 83 1/3% in the defined clear face cuttings. (9) Select - Is a No. 1 Common piece of lumber (the poorer side grades No. 1 Common) and the reverse side (the better side) grades FAS. The price of Selects and 1-Face is usually the same as FAS. Much of this grade is also exported, but if exceptionally long, wide, and clear on both faces, cuttings are required, then Select lumber is often used. Often, Select grade lumber is used in the Northern U.S., while 1-Face is used in the South. |
